I know we grew up with the rule “look, don’t stare.” However, in modern days, that rule may apply in person, but digitally? People stare, zoom, and scroll all day long. That means details matter when you're posting on social media. And just like telling a great story in person, you can share an event summary through images with a photo dump.
I’m about to give you a quick rundown of what I think makes for a great photo dump after an event. But before we dive in, remember this: when you’re posting online, you’re speaking. It’s important to listen by interacting with others’ posts and to speak without overdoing it.
I’m going to share my formula for the perfect photo dump, with some bonus tips to make your post pop, including how to anchor it, why music matters, and a step-by-step guide to attaching a song to your Instagram carousel. You can include up to 20 images or videos in a single carousel post on Instagram.
Let’s dive in.
The Perfect Photo Dump Formula
Start Strong: The Solo Shot
Start with you. It’s like waving at your audience as they scroll—“Hey, it’s my post, stick around!” A polished look, a candid smile, or even a cheeky pose works—it’s your moment to say, “Hey, I was here!”Surprise Them: The Quick Video
Follow with a 2-5 second video clip that captures a detail or vibe from the event. This isn’t a reel—it’s a raw, personal moment. Think close-ups of clinking glasses, the shimmer of event lighting, or laughter in motion. Video adds energy and draws people into the scene.Tell the Story: The Mix of Who, What, and Why
Who: Share the relationships that mattered. This could be a group pictures, a selfie with someone special, include as many group shots as you want!
What: Highlight the details of the event or location itself. This image allows by sight a recognizable location. That might be that you're at the ocean, or you can see the city skyline in the background, or a picture at the event that is recognizable like showcasing the art. This is your context shot.
Why: This is the emotional connection. A photo or moment that shows why the event mattered to you. Was it a celebration, a meaningful experience, or just a great time?
Close It Out with an Anchor Photo
End the carousel with another solo shot if you have it, or pick your favorite image from the event. Think of this as the exclamation point at the end of your visual story. Maybe a shot of the sunset, an empty room as the event wraps up, or a calm, reflective moment. The Caption: Wrap It in Words
This is where you pull it all together. Share why you were there, what made it special, and what you took away from it. Keep it authentic and personal—your audience connects more with your why than the what.
Make It Stand Out: Add Music
Instagram’s algorithm loves carousels, and it loves them even more when you add music. A carousel is simply a multi-image or multi-video post that users can swipe through. Adding music creates an immersive experience that keeps people on your post longer—a win for engagement!
How to Add Music to Your Carousel
Create Your Carousel Post: Select your photos and videos. Make sure they’re in the right order before moving to the next step.
On the Caption Page: After you’ve written your caption, you’ll see a “Add Music” option near the bottom (just under the “Tag People” section).
Choose a Song: Tap “Add Music” and search for a song that fits the vibe of your event. Instagram lets you pick a specific part of the track to play, so find the perfect 10-15 seconds.
Preview & Adjust: Before posting, preview your carousel with the music attached to make sure everything flows.
Post It: Once it’s perfect, hit share and let the music elevate your photo dump.

Chronological Chaos
Don’t post the photos in the order they happened. That’s too predictable. Instead, mix it up so your audience feels like they’re peeking into your head, not just your camera roll. Maybe start with the group shot from dinner, then a blurry pic of your shoes, then the sunset that made you emotional.High-Low Energy Balance
Pair the loud, fun moments with quiet, candid ones. You want it to feel dynamic—like the event was both a party and an existential crisis. For example, a chaotic dance floor moment followed by your half-empty drink on a table. Contrast is everything.Throw in Something Random
The key to making it feel casual? Add something slightly off-topic. Maybe a pic of your dog you took before leaving for the event or a screenshot of a weird text from a friend that sums up the vibe. It makes your post feel less curated.Blurred or Imperfect Shots
Not every photo needs to be in HD. A blurry picture of your friends laughing or a photo taken mid-movement says this was real. Those "flaws" make it relatable and human.
Your Story Deserves to Be Seen
You’ve already done the hardest part—you got out there, lived your moment, and captured the magic through your lens. That alone is something to celebrate! Sharing your story through a photo dump is the perfect way to let your audience in on your world, and guess what? They want to see it.
Your fans, followers, and friends love you for who you are, and they’re excited to feel like they’re right there with you. So don’t overthink it—your story, your vibe, and your moments are exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
Now go hit post and let your light shine! You’ve got this.
